DirectorLink · LG TV Notifications for Control4

A free, open-source Control4 driver that shows notifications as a pop-up on LG webOS TVs: a doorbell ring, a camera alert, a door or gate opened, the alarm. It talks straight to the TV with LG's local API, the one LG's own phone app uses: no cloud, no LG account, no ThinQ and no extra hardware.

Free. No subscription, no license key, no account with us.

Made by DirectorLink, the open-source management layer for Control4 homes. Works on its own: DirectorLink is not required, and Composer programming can show pop-ups too.

Pop-ups show only while the TV is on: off, in standby or with no answer within 3 seconds, a pop-up is dropped. The driver never turns the TV on, changes its channel, input or volume, or keeps anything off its screen. At most one pop-up every 5 seconds on each TV, a doorbell or the alarm first. The text shows as it was sent, Hebrew and other right-to-left languages included. No picture: on many LG TVs a pop-up that carries one is not shown at all, so the driver never sends one.

What it needs

Setup in three steps

  1. Add the driver

In Composer Pro, add DirectorLink · LG TV Notifications to the room of the TV, once for each TV. Turn the TV on: on, not in standby.

  2. Pick the TV and accept

Pick the TV in TVs Found, or type its IP address in TV IP Address. Within a few seconds the TV asks whether to allow a new device: accept it with the TV's remote. Status says Paired.

  3. Test and choose

Run Test Notification: the TV shows a pop-up. Then choose what this TV shows: Doorbell, Camera Alerts, Doors and Gates, Alarm, Other, and Quiet Hours if you want them.

The words of the TV's question are the TV's own: they may not name DirectorLink. The TV asks for about two minutes; if nobody accepts, run Pair Again with the TV on. The TV remembers the driver, so it asks once. Every setting and what each Status means are on the driver's Documentation tab in Composer and in the full guide.

With DirectorLink

DirectorLink 1.13 and newer sends its alerts to this driver as soon as both are in the project, with nothing to set up: the doorbell, camera alerts, doors and gates opened, and, with Alarm Status on in DirectorLink, the alarm going off, as each TV's choices allow. They are in the home owner's language, in the same words as on the family's phones, and they come straight from the controller: no phone needs alerts switched on, and the internet can be down. The driver follows DirectorLink's notification agreement, which any screen driver may follow.
