DirectorLink Drivers

DirectorLink · Android TV Notifications for Control4

A free, open-source Control4 driver that shows notifications as a pop-up with a picture on TVs that run Google TV or Android TV: a doorbell ring with who is at the door, a camera alert, a door or gate opened, the alarm. It talks straight to PiPup, a free app on the TV: no cloud, no account and no extra hardware.

Free. No subscription, no license key, no account with us.

Made by DirectorLink, the open-source management layer for Control4 homes. Works on its own: DirectorLink is not required, and Composer programming can show pop-ups too.

What happened – Notification Shown and Notification Failed events, the last notification's text

Just before each pop-up the driver asks PiPup whether the screen is on: off, or no answer within 3 seconds, and the pop-up is dropped. The driver never turns the TV on or changes its channel, input or volume. At most one pop-up every 5 seconds on each TV, a doorbell or the alarm first; a new one replaces the one still showing. The text shows as it was sent, Hebrew and other right-to-left languages included. The controller fetches the picture and sends it inside the pop-up, so the TV never has to reach the camera.

The app on the TV

The TV runs PiPup — TV Notifications by Alexander Savin, free on Google Play. It shows a pop-up when a device on the home network asks, with no cloud and no account, and starts by itself when the TV starts. Only this PiPup: other apps called PiPup take other requests and do not work with the driver.

What it needs

Setup in four steps

  1. PiPup on the TV

On the TV, install PiPup — TV Notifications from Google Play. Open it once, select Grant display permission, and press its test button: a pop-up shows.

  2. Add the driver

In Composer Pro, add DirectorLink · Android TV Notifications to the room of the TV, once for each TV.

  3. Pick the TV

Pick the TV in TVs Found, where PiPup's TVs come first, marked PiPup answers, or type its IP address. Status says Ready.

  4. Test and choose

Run Test Notification. Then choose what this TV shows, Quiet Hours, and the look: Position, Seconds On Screen and Pictures.

Leave PiPup's token and IP allowlist off, or enter the same token in PiPup Token and add the controller's address to the allowlist: Status says when PiPup wants either. Every setting and what each Status means are on the driver's Documentation tab in Composer and in the full guide.

With DirectorLink

DirectorLink 1.13 and newer sends its alerts to this driver as soon as both are in the project, with nothing to set up: the doorbell with the picture of who is at the door, camera alerts with the camera's picture, doors and gates opened, and, with Alarm Status on in DirectorLink, the alarm going off, as each TV's choices allow. They are in the home owner's language, in the same words as on the family's phones, and they come straight from the controller: no phone needs alerts switched on, and the internet can be down. The driver follows DirectorLink's notification agreement, the same as DirectorLink · LG TV Notifications.
